As of late, I have been focusing a lot of time and unnecessary energy in acquiring more twitter followers, writing guest blog posts, and trying to obtain the much coveted Dribbble invite. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Dribbble is an exclusive online show, tell, and critique community for designers. When I say ‘exclusive,’ I mean inclusion by invite only – you could read more about the famed Dribbble and it’s glory in Daren Hoyt’s article Dribbble, Meritocracy, and the Open Web. To be chosen, means your good enough to make the cut. But what about the designers who haven’t? Are they not “good enough?”
This highschool-like mentality has broken loose all over the Twitterverse. Search “dribbble invite” or “@dribbble” and you’ll find many (too many) designers who’ve lost track of what matters all in the name of popularity and for the sake of being included. A ridiculous amount of time is being devoted to obtain something just because it isn’t tangible. *Beware, the hype can be most infectious – I can attest to that. Read the rest of this entry »
